On Saturday, May 6th, 2023 the 69th annual MUG Race forecast was
for light and variable wind conditions, but like most weather forecasts it
was wholly wrong. Shortly after the start, the wind picked up leaving the
river completely covered in whitecaps. The conditions were ideal for setting
a course record and that is precisely what Eric Roberts and Pete Hampshire
did on the ARC-22, finishing the race in 2 hours, 53 Minutes, and 28
Seconds, besting the previous record of 2 Hours, 56 minutes, 57 seconds,
which was held by Bill Roberts, Eric Roberts & Dave Weir on the RC-30.
Not only did Eric have a great race, but Rich Brew finished 2nd on
his RC-27, (3 Hours, 14 Minutes, 17 Seconds) followed by Mike Kelly who
finished 3rd on his ARC-22 (3 Hours, 14 Minutes, 53 Seconds), a healthy 23
minutes ahead of the 4th place boat (Narcra 6.0NA). Congratulations all on a
great showing!
The Mug Race is a 38-nautical mile
one-way race down the St. Johns River from Palatka to Orange Park Florida
which is billed as the world's longest river sailing race. It is open to all
sailboats with a mast height of 44 feet or less.
