White Bear Open Catamaran Fleet - GPS Action Replay

What is GPS Action Replay?

GPS Action Replay is a Java application that enables the replay and analysis of GPS data from devices like the Velocitek SC-1 and other handheld GPS devices. Currently Tom Haberman has three Velocitek SC-1 units which are being used by different fleet members, after the races the tracks are consolidated and uploaded here for your review.

GPS Action Replay (GPSAR) was written by Yann Mathet and is freely distributed from his website www.gpsactionreplay.com

How do I get GPS Action Replay?

GPS Action Replay is a Java applet that will run on any Windows, Linux or Mac platform right in your internet browser's window just by clicking on one of the links below.  *This is not working 100% right now so please see the notes in the download section below.

In addition to using the online version you can also download GPSAR from www.gpsactionreplay.com and install it on your computer.  The one advantage to downloading and installing on your computer is that it will remember many of the settings from one session to the next, something that is not possible with the online version.

How do I use GPS Action Replay?

Here are a few tips that might make things easier:

  1. Check the "waypoints" check box on the right and this will show any buoy's I have programmed in.
  2. Under the "Dynamic View" menu in the upper left choose Username, one of the speed choices, and the apparent wind vector.  I would also "Adjust Wind Speed" to the wind speed I have listed at the top of the page.
  3. Under "Options-Set colors to given speeds" you can click and drag the speeds downward.  I found it works best to divide all of the colors up in the 0-25 speed range.  This give you a better visualization of speed during playback.
  4. Under "VirtualRun & Stats" if you choose "Compute Speed Statistics" it will give you a speed report for each boat.

I have only touched on the surface of what GPSAR is capable of.  If you want to learn more please visit the developers website at www.gpsactionreplay.com , there you will find an introduction & tutorial along with a user forum which you might find useful.

Note: Due to an unknown problem on our server the above tracks probably won't work.  I am working with our IT people to fix this issue, but in the meantime I have created a zip file you can download and run the tracks on your home PC.  Follow these steps and everything should work OK.

  1. Download the zip file by clicking here
  2. When prompted to open or save, choose OPEN.
  3. When the zip file opens you will see a folder called "appletGPSAR", right click on this folder and choose COPY.
  4. Now go to your desktop and right click and choose PASTE.
  5. The "appletGPSAR" folder  should now be located on your desktop.
  6. Double click on the appletGPSAR folder so it opens.
  7. Choose one of the HTML files and double click on them.  HTML files on most Windows platforms will have the Internet Explorer "E" logo as an icon.
  8. When your web browser opens it might pop up a message that says something about Security & Active X controls,  Choose the option to allow or unblock.
  9. At this point GPS Action Replay should load.
